The Shawshank Redemption is one of my favourite films. It’s one of those films I can watch over and over again. The scene in which Andy Dufresne turns to his friend, Red, and says ‘get busy living or get busy dying’ always strikes a chord within me.
It made me realise that this is the only life we have to do all the things we’re ever going to do. If we’re trapped in a job we don’t like or a toxic relationship then it is up to us to dig our way out, to get busy living. Or we can accept our lot and remain as we are. Either way, we’re going to die, so choose to embrace life and dig for freedom or become institutionalised, like poor Brooksy.
It took Andy Dufresne 30 years to dig his way to freedom through consistently scrapping away at the walls that contained him. How long do you think you could dig in order to be free?
